The Emergency Medical Services Authority of Oklahoma City (EMSA) inappropriately billed and Medicare paid for advanced life support (ALS) emergency transports in 2010. Of the 100 claims in our random sample, 10 were for ALS emergency transports that were not medically necessary. Based on the sample results, we estimated that EMSA improperly billed for at least 1,210 ALS emergency transports with an associated overpayment of at least $366,000.
