Based on the results of our statistical sample, we estimated that Kansas received $589,000 in unallowable Federal Medicaid reimbursement for family planning claims from July 1, 2005, to June 30, 2009. These errors occurred because the Medicaid Management Information System's edits did not always correctly identify claims for reimbursement at the enhanced 90 percent Federal financial participation rate and because Medicaid guidelines regarding informed consent for sterilization were not always followed.
