Medicare Compliance Review of the University of Iowa Hospital for Calendar Years 2009 and 2010

The University of Iowa Hospital (the Hospital), located in Iowa City, Iowa, complied with Medicare billing requirements for 124 of the 398 outpatient and inpatient claims we reviewed. However, the Hospital did not fully comply with Medicare billing requirements for the remaining 274 claims, resulting in overpayments totaling $826,000 for CYs 2008 through 2011. Overpayments occurred primarily because the Hospital did not have adequate controls to prevent the incorrect billing of Medicare claims.
