Medicare Compliance Review of Saint Thomas Hospital for Calendar Years 2009 and 2010

Saint Thomas Hospital (the Hospital) (operating in Tennessee) complied with Medicare billing requirements for 206 of the 250 inpatient and outpatient claims we reviewed. However, the Hospital did not fully comply with Medicare billing requirements for the remaining 44 claims, resulting in estimated overpayments totaling at least $1.1 million for calendar years 2009 and 2010. These overpayments occurred primarily because the Hospital did not have adequate controls to prevent incorrect billing of these Medicare claims.
