Medicare Compliance Review of Mary Washington Hospital for Calendar Years 2009 Through 2011

Mary Washington Hospital (the Hospital), located in Fredericksburg, Virginia, complied with Medicare billing requirements for 142 of the 195 inpatient and outpatient claims we reviewed. However, the Hospital did not fully comply with Medicare billing requirements for the remaining 53 claims, resulting in net overpayments of $327,000 for calendar years 2009 through 2011. These errors occurred primarily because the Hospital did not have adequate controls to prevent the incorrect billing of Medicare claims within the selected risk areas that contained errors.
