University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Agreed to Pay $1.3 Million for Allegedly Violating the Civil Monetary Penalties Law by Submitting False Claims as Part of Clinical Trial Research
After it self-disclosed conduct to OIG, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW), Texas, agreed to pay $1,338,885.24 for allegedly violating the Civil Monetary Penalties Law. OIG alleged that UTSW submitted false claims for patient care items and services provided as part of clinical trial research that: (1) should not have been billed to trial sponsors; (2) should have been provided free-of-charge for beneficiaries enrolled in clinical trials; (3) were for research purposes only and not used in beneficiaries’ direct clinical management; or (4) were not needed for reasonable and necessary care.
