University Medical Associates of The Medical University of South Carolina Agreed to Pay $81,000 for Allegedly Violating the Civil Monetary Penalties Law by Submitting Claims for Upcoded Anesthesiology Services

After it self-disclosed conduct to OIG, University Medical Associates of The Medical University of South Carolina (UMSC), South Carolina, agreed to pay $81,861.43 for allegedly violating the Civil Monetary Penalties Law. OIG alleged that UMSC submitted claims for anesthesia services performed by a certified registered nurse anesthetist claiming medical “direction” by anesthesiologists when the services rendered should have been billed under medical “supervision,” a lower paying service.
