Merit Health Medical Group Agreed to Pay $2 Million for Allegedly Violating the Civil Monetary Penalties Law by Submitting Claims for Medically Unnecessary Services

After it self-disclosed conduct to OIG, The Vicksburg Clinic, LLC d/b/a Merit Health Medical Group (Merit), Mississippi, agreed to pay $2,022,904.96 for allegedly violating the Civil Monetary Penalties Law. OIG alleged that Merit submitted claims for inpatient behavioral health services provided by a physician in an affiliated hospital's adolescent psychiatric, geriatric psychiatric, adult detoxification, and adult psychiatric units, and the affiliated hospital's adolescent children's day unit, when the medical record did not support medical necessity or the level of care billed and there was cloning of documentation for multiple dates of treatment for the same patients and for multiple patients on the same dates of treatment.
