Dr. Lloyd Costello Agreed to Be Excluded for 7 Years for Allegedly Prescribing Medically Unnecessary Drugs
On January 19, 2024, Lloyd A. Costello, M.D., California, agreed to be excluded from participation in all Federal health care programs for seven years under 42 U.S.C. 1320a-7(b)(6)(B) and 1320a-7(b)(7). OIG alleged that Costello furnished and caused to be furnished prescription drugs to patients substantially in excess of their needs and of a quality which failed to meet professionally recognized standards of health care. OIG further alleged Costello knowingly caused to be presented claims to Medicare Part D for a pattern of prescriptions for controlled substances that he knew or should have known were not medically necessary. OIG’s Office of Investigations and Office of Counsel to the Inspector General, represented by Senior Counsels Katie Fink and Gregory Becker, collaborated to achieve this resolution.
