Wellmont Health System Agreed to Pay $851,000 for Allegedly Violating the Civil Monetary Penalties Law by Submitting Claims for Services Not Provided as Claimed

After they self-disclosed conduct to OIG, Wellmont Health System and its wholly owned subsidiaries Wellmont Medical Associates and WPS Poviders, Inc. (collectively, "Wellmont") and Medical Education Assistance Corporation (MEAC), Tennessee, agreed to pay $851,061 for allegedly violating the Civil Monetary Penalties Law. OIG alleged that Wellmont and MEAC submitted false or fraudulent claims for the professional services of a trauma surgeon that did not comply with teaching physician requirements because the medical record did not support that he was personally present during the key portion of the procedure or service.
