Washington State University Agreed to Pay $824,000 for Allegedly Violating the Civil Monetary Penalties Law by Overcharging HHS Grants

On September 20, 2021, Washington State University (WSU), Pullman, Washington, entered into an $824,208.09 settlement agreement with OIG. The settlement agreement resolves allegations that WSU presented or caused to be presented requests for payment for direct salary expenses above the HHS salary cap limitation and indirect cost charges associated with those salary expenses to: (1) the HHS Payment Management System; and (2) HHS award recipients related to awards on which WSU was a subrecipient. Senior Counsel Michael Torrisi and Associate Counsel Shawnda Atkins represented OIG.
