Thomas Byrne, MD Agreed to Pay $223,000 for Allegedly Violating the Civil Monetary Penalties Law by Receiving Remuneration in Exchange for Ordering Durable Medical Equipment and Genetic Tests and Prescribing Medications

On December 19, 2022, Thomas Byrne, M.D. (Dr. Byrne), Tequesta, Florida, entered into a $223,502 settlement agreement with OIG. The settlement agreement resolves allegations that Dr. Byrne solicited and received remuneration, in the form of monetary payments related to purported telemedicine and diagnostic consultations, from various telemedicine and staffing companies in exchange for ordering and prescribing medically unnecessary durable medical equipment, genetic testing, prescription medications, and topical creams for which the Medicare Program paid.
