The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and U.T. Physicians Agreed to Pay $78,000 for Allegedly Violating the Civil Monetary Penalties Law by Submitting Claims for Orders or Referrals Signed by Medical Assistants
After they self-disclosed conduct to OIG, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and U.T. Physicians (collectively, “UT”), Houston, Texas, agreed to pay $78,715.92 for allegedly violating the Civil Monetary Penalties Law. OIG alleged that UT caused the submission of false claims to Medicare and Medicaid for controlled substances, durable medical equipment, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech pathology that were purported to be ordered or referred by a physician, when the orders for controlled substances and referrals for durable medical equipment, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech pathology were signed by the physician’s medical assistants.
