Smartbox Assistive Technology Agreed to Pay $50,000 for Allegedly Violating the Civil Monetary Penalties Law by Paying Remuneration to Contractors in the Form of Sales Commissions

After it self-disclosed conduct to OIG, Smartbox Assistive Technology, Inc. (Smartbox), Pennsylvania, agreed to pay $50,000 for allegedly violating the Civil Monetary Penalties Law provisions applicable to kickbacks. OIG alleged that Smartbox paid remuneration to independent contractors in the form of sales commissions in exchange for the independent contractors' referrals of durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies to Smartbox that were payable under the Medicare and Medicaid programs.
