RMS Lifeline and Vascular Surgery Associates Agreed to Pay $79,000 for Allegedly Violating the Civil Monetary Penalties Law by Making False Statements in Support of Meaningful Use Payments and Upcoding the Level of Service Provided
After they self-disclosed conduct to OIG, RMS Lifeline, Inc. (Lifeline), and Vascular Surgery Associates of Richmond, P.C. (VSA), Virginia, agreed to pay $79,668 for allegedly violating the Civil Monetary Penalties Law. OIG alleged that Lifeline and VSA submitted: (1) false certifications that VSA’s physicians met the CMS Meaningful Use Program requirements and were eligible to obtain the associated incentive payments when they were not eligible; and (2) claims to Federal health care programs for physician visits (CPT code 99212) that should have been submitted as nurse visits (CPT code 99211).
