Ballert Orthopedic of Chicago Agreed to Pay $150,000 for Allegedly Violating the Civil Monetary Penalties Law by Submitting Claims for Services Rendered by an Unlicensed Individual and Employing the Individual While Excluded

On September 30, 2022, GNJ ENT, Inc. formerly GEMA, Inc. d/b/a Ballert Orthopedic of Chicago (Ballert), Chicago, Illinois, entered into a $150,445.10 settlement agreement with OIG. The settlement agreement resolves allegations that Ballert employed an individual who was excluded from participating in any Federal health care program. OIG's investigation revealed that the excluded individual, an orthotic and laboratory technician, provided items or services that were billed to Federal health care programs. OIG also alleged that Ballert submitted claims for orthotic services provided by the individual when he did not have a valid license to perform services as an orthotic technician.
