Health and Safety Monitoring in Head Start

Head Start serves roughly 1 million vulnerable children and their families annually at a cost of $10.06 billion as of fiscal year 2020. Prior OIG work identified significant health and safety violations at some Head Start facilities. We will examine how the Office of Head Start (OHS) monitors and enforces Federal health and safety standards in Head Start facilities. Additionally, we will describe recent trends in health and safety violations and assess whether OHS consistently and effectively monitors grantees to ensure children's safety.
