Medicare Costs Associated with Defective Medical Devices
According to the Food and Drug Administration, recalls of medical devices nearly doubled from 2003 through 2012. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has expressed concerns about the impact of the cost of replacement devices, including ancillary cost, on Medicare payments for inpatient and outpatient services. We will review Medicare claims to identify the costs to Medicare resulting from additional use of medical services associated with defective or recalled medical devices.
