Reviews of Medicare Contractors' Payments for Selected Outpatient Drugs

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services pays Medicare claims through the Medicare contractor in each of 13 Medicare jurisdictions. From July 1, 2009, through June 30, 2012, Medicare contractors nationwide paid providers $11.5 billion for 26 million claim line items for outpatient drugs. Previous OIG reviews of outpatient services found that Medicare contractors overpaid providers by more than $122.4 million for selected outpatient drugs. Because of the significant overpayments identified in those reviews, we performed 13 individual reviews of payments for selected outpatient drugs at the Medicare contractors.
