OIG Oversight for State Medicaid Fraud Control Units

The 50 State Medicaid Fraud Control Units (MFCUs), located in 49 States and the District of Columbia, investigate and prosecute Medicaid provider fraud as well as complaints of patient abuse or neglect in Medicaid-funded facilities and board and care facilities. OIG provides oversight for the MFCUs and administers a Federal grant award that provides 75 percent of each MFCU’s funding. As part of OIG’s oversight, we provide guidance to the MFCUs; assess their adherence to Federal regulations, policy, and performance standards; and collect and analyze performance data. We also provide technical assistance and training and identify effective practices in MFCU management and operations. We will perform on-site reviews of a sample of MFCUs.
