Review of Medicaid Payments for Services Claimed for Deceased Beneficiaries in California

The California Department of Health Care Services (the State agency) made Medicaid payments to providers for claims with dates of service after beneficiaries’ deaths. Specifically, the State agency paid a total of $273,000 ($137,000 Federal share) for 1,205 fee-for-service claims for 35 deceased Medicaid beneficiaries.
