While Washington University in St. Louis's (the grantee) internal controls were adequate to ensure that the majority of costs claimed were allowable, the grantee did not comply with Federal regulations and the terms of the grant when claiming $737 in costs under National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants 2R01HD036904-06A2, 3R01HD036904-07S1, and 5R01HD036904-07 for unallowable food, telephone, hotel, and alcohol charges. NIH awarded the grantee three related American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 grants totaling $4.9 million for research on aspects of treatment of overweight children.
