Some Hospitals in Florida and Puerto Rico Claimed Residents as More Than One Full-Time Equivalent

Some hospitals in Florida and Puerto Rico did not always claim Medicare graduate Medical education (GME) reimbursement for residents in accordance with Federal requirements. Specifically, we found that 26 hospitals claimed residents for the same period as more than 1 full-time equivalent on cost reports covering fiscal years 2009 and 2010. As a result, 15 of the 26 hospitals received excess Medicare GME reimbursement totaling $457,000.
