The OIG Hotline accepts tips from all sources.
All HHS and contractor employees have a responsibility to assist in combating fraud, waste and abuse in all departmental programs. As such you are encouraged to report matters involving fraud, waste and mismanagement in any departmental program(s) to the Hotline.
Most tips processed by the Hotline fall in the following categories:
- Fraud/Waste in ARRA Recovery grants
- Crimes or gross misconduct committed by Department employees/contractors
- Conflicts of interest on the part of Department employees/contractors
- Cost overruns in Department programs/initiatives due to mismanagement
- False applications for Department contracts/grants
- Failure to provide the services/products for Department grants/contracts
- False claims submitted to Medicare/Medicaid
- Kickbacks/inducements for referrals by Medicare/Medicaid providers
- Medical Identity Theft
- Door-to-door solicitation of Medicare/Medicaid beneficiaries
- Misrepresentation of Medicare private plans
- Failure of a hospital to evaluate and stabilize an emergency patient
- Abuse/neglect in nursing homes and other long term care facilities
- Failure to pay child support (limited to interstate cases)
The Hotline carefully reviews all tips that are submitted for relevance, but as a rule does not forward the following types of complaints (suggestions on where to direct these complaints are provided in parentheses):
- Complaints about Department policy (Office of the Secretary
) - Allegations by Department employees of discrimination on the basis of race, gender, ethnicity, religion or sexual preference (Your agency's EEO officer)
- Appeals of administrative decisions made by Department agencies/contractors - including Medicare payment decisions and contract/grant awards (consult the guidelines for the particular program)
- Appeals of judicial decisions by state/federal courts involving Department programs (The court that issued the decision)
- Complaints of failure to safeguard medical information, i.e. HIPAA violations (HHS Office of Civil Rights
) - Customer service complaints involving Department employees/contractors (Management of the relevant agency)
- Social Security disability fraud (Social Security Administration OIG
) - Failure to pay child support (intrastate cases) (The court that issued the child support order)
- Allegations of Identity Theft unrelated to Department programs (Federal Trade Commission
)
